About BrewedLate
BrewedLate is run by one person. I'm Florian. I grew up in Germany, where filter coffee was the only coffee anyone made at home, and I live in New Zealand now. This site is what came out of me learning about coffee late and writing down what I found.
How it started
For years I drank whatever the machine at home made: pad machines, a French press, a Moka pot. A V60 at a local cafe, made from a $40 bag of Ethiopian beans, changed what I thought filter coffee could taste like. I switched to filter at home, with a Hario Switch and a hand grinder, and started comparing what New Zealand roasters charge for their beans. That comparison became the roaster directory and price tracking on this site.
Why I roast
In March 2026 I did the maths. A 250 g bag from a roaster I like cost $26, about $104 a kilo. The same coffee unroasted was about $34 a kilo. I bought a second-hand Kaffelogic Nano 7 for $900 with no roasting experience and started logging every batch.
My first roasts were either a little dark or sour. Copying one coffee I liked, a Kenya Gatugi peaberry, took 17 attempts. What made it workable in spare time was keeping every roast log and tasting note and using an AI model to suggest the next roast from them. The roast tracker on this site is that system, built for my own roasts first.
What is first-hand here and what is not
- Roast logs, roast profiles I have used, and the Kaffelogic posts come from my own roasts. The numbers are from my logs.
- The roaster directory, prices and green coffee suppliers are collected from the roasters' and suppliers' own websites.
If something on the site is wrong, tell me through the contact page.
More of my writing
I write about this on my personal blog: 77 roasts later, The home roaster business case, Buying coffee gear directly from the maker, and Rediscovering filter coffee.
